Vedic exponent hailed on birth centenary

CUDDALORE:

The birth centenary of Balarama Sastri was celebrated under the auspices of the Sri Sankara Bhakta Jana Sabha here on Sunday.

Balarama Sastri is well versed in the Sama Veda, which has earned him the coveted title “Sama Veda Samrat.” Born at Paranur in Thirukkoilur block in the then South Arcot district in 1911, he has devoted almost eight decades in the service of Sama Veda, through public discourses and imparting its nuances and glory among the youths. In 1931, he was initiated into the Vedas under the tutelage of Visvesvara Kanapadigal at Thiruvidaimarudur. Later, he shifted to Cuddalore where he played a pivotal role in setting up a Veda patasala. His scholarly disposition has attracted many aspirants who adulate him for having made the study of Vedas a pleasant and rewarding experience.

For him, Krishna Premi Swamy of Paranur is the guru. Speaking at the felicitation function, Krishna Premi Swamy noted that after intense penance Hiranyan got a boon through which he almost attained the status of immortality. But his haughty nature was challenged by his offspring Prahaladan, whose invocation made Lord Vishnu to manifest in the form of Narasimha to put an end to the former's life.

The Swamy further said:

“Those who indulge in acts of adharma will have their life cut short, whereas those who follow the dharmic path will have a long and peaceful life as in the case of Balarama Sastri. Taking proper care of the exponents would be as good as preserving the Vedas,” he said. District Sessions Court Judge D. Ramabadran, quoting the Isha Upanishad, said that those who were performing their karmic duty without swerving from the path of dharma would live for a hundred years as was evidenced from the life of Balarama Sastri. K.Krishnamurthy of Krishna Hospital said it was a medical miracle that Balarama Sastri who was admitted to his hospital in a coma stage sometime back turned around on the visit of Krishna Premi Swamy to his ward. S. Arunachalam, a senior advocate, K.Gopi, coordinator, and others spoke.
