The spurt in crimes in the recent past has made the Cuddalore police distribute handbills to citizens, explaining certain steps on safeguarding their property and valuables.
To avert house break-in, residents should make it a point to keep jewellery and money in bank lockers. They should secure the doors with inbuilt locks and put crossbars behind the doors for extra support. Grill gates should be fixed both at the front and rear entrances. If anybody knocks at the door or rings the bell at night, the residents should ensure the identity of the person before opening the door. Before going to bed, people should ensure that all doors and windows are locked.
They should not sleep by the side of open windows, especially putting on jewellery. All valuables should be kept away from windows. Whenever an entire family has to go out of town for days, they should inform the nearby police station. If any theft attempt is noted, the family members should not touch the alimrah and other objects but report the matter immediately to the police.
If they come across the movement of any suspicious person or vehicles in their area, they should bring it to the notice of the police. To prevent theft of two-wheelers, chain-locks should be used in addition to regular locks. Whenever women wearing jewellery go out on walk, they should ensure that they are not stalked or any stranger follows them on two-wheeler.
