CUDDALORE:

Workers of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) observed a fast here on Wednesday in support of their 14-point charter of demands. They demanded regularisation of service, fixation of salary in accordance with the service period and attendant benefits and leave facility. The wage agreement should be revised once in two years.

They said that rules provided for regularisation after serving for 240 days, but for the past 37 years there were engaged in loading and unloading of essential commodities in the godowns of the TNCSC, stitching bags and delivering commodities to nutrition meal centres in a responsible manner. They also wanted the working hours to be limited to seven hours a day and, for excess work, they demanded double wages. If any worker happens to die in harness, his family should be given a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh and a job to his heir, based on qualifications. After attaining 50 years, if the workers could not carry on with the task, they should be given alternative jobs of light nature.
