Annamalai University Vice-Chancellor M.Ramanathan addressing an international conference on the university premises at Chidambaram.
CUDDALORE:
Post-globalisation, the nation-state concept is under attack because sovereignty has been made shaky by the all-pervasive economic clout, said V.T. Patil, general president of the International Congress of Social Philosophy (ICSP).
Mr. Patil was delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the ninth international conference on ‘Post-globalisation and the emerging world order' organised by Annamalai University at Chidambaram on Sunday. State sovereignty had become a mirage as it existed only in theory. Nations were facing an identity crisis, euphemistically and practically. Supra-national organisations, non-governmental organisations and civil agencies had made inroads into the administration. Multi-national companies had started dictating the policies of host countries. In neo-globalisation, individual freedom and concerns of equity and social justice were subordinated to overwhelming obsession with mass production.
Obviously, inclusive growth with a human face had taken a backseat, he said. Mr. Patil, who was formerly Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, deplored that the reckless exploitation of resources had resulted in climate change, adding to the misery of humanity, particularly in developing countries. He noted for the rise of every one degree in temperature 10 million people were affected. While the 20th Century wars were fought for acquiring territory and subjugating millions in Asia, Africa and Latin America, the post-globalisation wars would be waged for capturing water sources, including the sea lanes. It would also witness imposed lifestyle, probably of the influential countries and disintegration of the long-cherished ethnic culture and value systems.
The focus on mass production and consumption would result in formation of giant cartels, giving rise to disgruntled elements and terrorism. Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University M. Ramanathan said though, post-globalisation, prosperity and health indicators had improved a lot in terms of value system, humankind had paid a heavy price. Dr. Ramanathan said it was noteworthy that eight decades ago the founders of Annamalai University had acted with farsightedness to establish the institution to impart value-based education in a socially and economically backward region. Ramjee Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of Jain Viswa Bharati University; B.P.Siddhashrama, Professor of Philosophy, Karnatak University; Sirajul Islam, ICSP general secretary; S.Rajendran, Dean of Arts and Science Faculty, Annamalai University, spoke.
