Helping hand: Collector P. Seetharaman disbursing aid to differently abled persons in Cuddalore on Tuesday.

Special self-help groups comprising differently abled persons in Cuddalore district have been given financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 4.12 crore, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.
At a function organised here on Tuesday to distribute the benefits, he told reporters that financial support was extended under the ‘Vazhnthu Kattuvom' scheme for economic empowerment and poverty alleviation. The scheme would be implemented in stages in 236 panchayats of four blocks. So far, 625 special SHGs had been formed and of them, 505 that came into existence four months ago received monetary assistance of Rs. 40.70 lakh. A sum of Rs. 3.71 crore was distributed to the remaining special SHGs in the form of revolving fund, direct loan, and economic assistance. With a view to training the differently abled persons to take up self-help ventures, the National Finance Corporation for Differently abled had sanctioned Rs. 18.75 lakh through the District Central Cooperative Bank to 122 beneficiaries.
Mr. Seetharaman also said that under the individual livelihood support scheme, a sum of Rs. 6.36 crore was disbursed among 4,230 differently abled persons and 2,835 persons belonging to the deprived sections Under the Kalaignar Health Scheme, 198 differently abled beneficiaries were identified in the Nallur and Vriddhachalam blocks, and 59 of them underwent life-saving operations. During the current year, it was proposed to cover 200 more persons under the scheme. The Collector gave away cheques for Rs. 8,000 (at the rate of Rs. 1,000 a month for the past eight months) to artists. Under the Education for All scheme, aids such as calipers, hearing aids and tricycles worth over Rs. 10 lakh were given to 596 beneficiaries, Mr. Seetharaman said. District Revenue Officer S. Natarjan, Welfare Officer for the differently abled Srinivasan, Project Officer (Vazhnthu Kattuvom) Nithyanandam, Personal Assistant to Collector Umapathi were present.
