CUDDALORE:
The Viduthalai Vengaigal, a fishermen's outfit, has urged the Union and State governments to sanction a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of over 500 Tamil Nadu fishermen who were killed by the Sri Lankan Navy and also government jobs for their wards. A resolution was adopted at the birth anniversary celebration of Singaravelar, a social reformist, here recently. It said that the fishermen, risking their lives, were helping the government earn a foreign exchange of Rs. 10,000 crore a year. Therefore, it would be only appropriate that a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh is given to the families of the fishermen who perish on the high seas.
